TMJ Osteoarthritis: Differential Diagnosis and Management

Roan S. Pechayco, DMD, Ph.D. DMD

Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a multifactorial and degenerative subtype of temporomandibular joint disorder. It presents with condylar deformities, joint pain and swelling, crepitus, and restricted condylar movement. It is also significantly correlated with condylar bone loss. Primarily, the differential diagnoses of TMJOA should include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Pain Dysfunction Syndrome, and Internal Derangement. Oftentimes, many patients are misdiagnosed. This lecture aims to provide a quick review of the characteristics, diagnosis, and management of TMJOA.
