OPAP 15th Annual Conference: “Breaking Bite: A Decade of Integrating Perspectives in Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain"

 OCTOBER 18, 2026

OPAP Launches 15th Annual Conference: “Breaking Bite” Marks a Decade of Integrating Perspectives in TMD and Orofacial Pain

The Orofacial Pain Association of the Philippines (OPAP) is set to hold its 15th Annual Conference, aptly themed “Breaking Bite: A Decade of Integrating Perspectives in Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain.” The conference will bring together dentists, specialists, educators, researchers, and healthcare professionals committed to advancing the understanding, diagnosis, and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial pain conditions.

Celebrating ten years of interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge integration, this year's conference highlights the evolution of contemporary approaches to TMD and orofacial pain. The theme reflects the growing recognition that successful patient management requires the convergence of multiple perspectives, including dentistry, medicine, psychology, physical therapy, sleep medicine, pain science, and behavioral health.

The scientific program will run from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, featuring lectures and discussions designed to provide participants with the latest evidence-based concepts, diagnostic strategies, and clinical management approaches in the field of orofacial pain. Attendees can expect valuable insights from experts who continue to shape the specialty through clinical practice, education, and research.

Following the scientific session, OPAP will conduct its Induction Ceremony from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, formally welcoming new members and recognizing individuals who have contributed to the organization's growth and mission. The ceremony serves as a reaffirmation of OPAP's commitment to fostering professional excellence and strengthening the community of clinicians dedicated to pain management.

The evening will culminate in a Fellowship Night beginning at 7:00 PM, providing an opportunity for members, alumni, colleagues, and guests to network, reconnect, and celebrate the milestones achieved by the organization over the past decade. The social gathering underscores the spirit of collaboration that has been central to OPAP's development as the leading professional organization for orofacial pain in the Philippines.

Advancing Orofacial Pain Education in the Philippines

Over the years, OPAP has played a pivotal role in advancing awareness and professional education on temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain throughout the country. Through annual conferences, continuing education programs, and collaborative initiatives, the organization has helped bridge the gap between emerging pain science and everyday clinical practice.

As TMD and orofacial pain continue to present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, the OPAP 15th Annual Conference aims to equip clinicians with updated knowledge and practical skills while fostering meaningful professional connections. The event promises to be both a celebration of the organization's achievements and a forward-looking discussion on the future of pain management in Philippine dentistry and healthcare.

“Breaking Bite” stands as a testament to a decade of shared learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of patients affected by temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain.

👶 Topic: Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Key Principles in Diagnosis and Management

🧠 Snoring, mouth breathing, ADHD symptoms… could it all be sleep apnea?

This talk is a must for pediatric dentists and general practitioners alike, as Dr. Aguilera unpacks early diagnostic markers, the role of AHI scoring, and treatment options—from adenotonsillectomy to CPAP and expansion therapy in children.

💥 Learn how early detection of sleep apnea in kids can prevent growth delays, behavioral problems, and long-term cardiopulmonary issues.

Dr. Kelvin Mar Bartolome

Fellow of the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine and Diplomate of the World Sleep Society.

🩺 Topic: Two-Way Trap: OSA & the Vicious Cycle of Comorbidities

🌀 Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea fueling a cycle of chronic disease?

It’s more than just snoring—OSA is a chronic, systemic condition that creates a dangerous loop of hypertension, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Dr. Bartolome’s lecture dives deep into how these comorbidities and OSA worsen each other, and why early detection and integrated care are crucial to breaking the cycle and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Corinne Somera-Atienza

Vice President of the Orofacial Pain Association of the Philippines.

🦷 Topic: Proposed Workflow for Dentists in Managing OSA Patients in the Philippines

💡 Want to start sleep dentistry the right way?

Dental Sleep Medicine is on the rise in the Philippines, offering dentists a vital role in managing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This lecture presents a proposed collaborative and multidisciplinary workflow—connecting dentists, sleep physicians, ENTs, and more. Dr. Carolina Marpaung

Sp.Pros, PhD, Department Head, Prosthodontic Department – University of Trisakti and Researcher, Academisch Centrum Tandheelkunde Amsterdam.

🦷 Topic: Beyond the Jaw: The Role of Sleep and Psychosocial Dynamics in TMD

💡 Are we still missing the bigger picture in TMD diagnosis?

Splint therapy alone may not be enough. TMD is rarely just a mechanical issue—it often reflects a deeper interplay of sleep disturbances and psychosocial factors. In this lecture, Dr. Marpaung unpacks the hidden drivers behind chronic pain and dysfunction, offering evidence-based insights that go beyond the jaw. Discover how integrating sleep and mental health considerations can lead to better, more sustainable outcomes for your TMD patients.

ABOUT THE COURSE

TMD pain and dysfunction is one of the most rapidly growing and difficult to understand areas of dental health services for the following reasons: First, the recognition that temporomandibular disorders are significant clinical problems; second, the need to develop a scientifically supported knowle dge base to improve the understanding of the diagnosis and management of pain and dysfunction of the masticatory system and related facial structures; third, the need for both clinicians and faculty with sufficient training and experience in temporomandibular joint problems and their differential diagnosis to provide quality patient care, teaching, and research in the field.

It is currently estimated that 25% of the population has pain or dysfunction at some period of their life and that at least 5% will seek therapy. General dentists are attempting to manage about 80% of these problems and the remaining 20% are treated by specialists.

This Course will present contemporary, practical and evidence-based information from four clinicians/speakers recognized in the field of TMD. There will be a balance among seminar-type lectures, laboratory workshop. The course will develop the participants' skill and confidence in handling TMD patients.

We believe there is a need for well-trained General Dentists to be able to manage TMD in the clinical setting and participate in academic and research areas as well as collaborate with other specialties.
